Certified in Production and Inventory Management (CPIM)

The APICS Certified in Production and Inventory Management (CPIM) program is one of the most recommended certification by employers worldwide.  The CPIM program offers in-depth education for individuals in the operations and supply chain management profession covering topics from demand management, material planning, capacity planning, supplier and customer relationship management, quality control, and continuous improvement. The CPIM certification is so comprehensive, that it is split into two parts, with a total of five modules:

  • CPIM Part 1:
    • This prep course covers the basic concepts to complete the flow of materials in a supply chain from suppliers to customers in manufacturing, distribution, service, and retail industries.  This includes the fundamental relationships in the design, planning, execution, monitoring, and control that occur.
    • Course module covered in CPIM Part 1:
      • Part 1, Module 1: Basics of Supply Chain Management
  • CPIM Part 2:
    • This prep course consists of four detailed and strategy modules in a single course that examines the planning and execution hierarchy from high-level planning to detailed shop-floor management. Examining in greater detail the concepts presented in Part 1 of the CPIM series, this module provides a framework for planning and decision making that examines the strategies and their implications on the operations functions throughout the supply chain.

      • Part 2, Module 1: Strategic Management of Resources
      • Part 2, Module 2: Master Planning of Resources
      • Part 2, Module 3: Detailed Scheduling and Planning
      • Part 2, Module 4: Execution and Control of Operations

Time Commitment

We understand, learning takes time. Below is a breakdown of our instruction time for CPIM:

  • CPIM Part 1:
    • 21 hours of classroom instruction (one 3-hour session per week for 7 weeks)
    • 3.5 hours of exam time consisting of 150 computer-based questions
  • CPIM Part 2:
    • 39 hours of classroom instruction (one 3-hour session per week for 13 weeks)
    • 3.5 hours of exam time consisting of 150 computer-based questions

 

Certification Process

To put it simply, the process to get a CPIM certification consists of the following steps:

  • Step 1: Sign up for a our CPIM Part 1 preparatory course. Attend the sessions and learn from others!
  • Step 2: Upon completion of the course, register for your exam. Information will be provided by your instructor.
  • Step 3: Pass your CPIM Part 1 exam. Achieve a score of at least 300; Score range is 200 to 350.

 

  • Step 4: Sign up for our CPIM Part 2 preparatory course. Round 2!
  • Step 5: Upon completion of the course, register for your exam. Information will still be provided by your instructor.
  • Step 6: Pass your CPIM Part 2 exam. Scoring system is the same as the first.

After passing, you must maintain your certification by earning a total of 75 Continuing Education credits (CE) every 5 years. Continuing Education are earned by participating at events with us at the local chapter, such as our PDMs, workshops, or Plant Tours.
